Job Title: Deputy Building Official (One Full-Time Position Available)
Essex County seeks an individual to fill the full-time position of Deputy Building Official which assists in planning, coordinating, and participating in building, mechanical, and plumbing inspection activities with responsibility for compliance with the Virginia Uniform Statewide Building Code and the Virginia Erosion and Sediment Control Regulations. Assists with administration of related laws and ordinances. Duties include, but are not limited to, review of building and erosion and sediment control plans and investigation of complaints. Comprehensive knowledge of building, electrical, plumbing, and mechanical code enforcement and thorough knowledge of building, construction, engineering and structural engineering principles and practices is required. State building and erosion and sediment control certifications preferred; required to obtain state building certification within 18 months of employment and emphasis on commercial and erosion and sediment control certification within one year. Any combination of education and experience equivalent to graduation from an accredited college or university with major course work in engineering, planning, architecture or related field and extensive experience in building code enforcement and inspections work is required. A valid Virginia driver’s license is also required. Applicants must submit a completed county application, resume with education, and employment/experience.
