Essex Public Library seeks a dynamic and visionary leader to serve as our next Library Director. We are a vibrant community hub located in the charming historic river town of Tappahannock, Virginia, serving a population of 10,500 in rural Essex County. The library’s innovative and creative staff have strong community support and a well-resourced collection.
About the Role:
The Library Director reports directly to the Library Board of Directors. As Director, you will be responsible for the overall leadership and management of the library and a staff of 4.5 FTE employees. Examples of duties include:
- Develop and implement the library's strategic plan
- Recommend and administer effective policies and procedures
- Hire and supervise staff and foster a positive and motivating attitude of leadership
- Prepare and administer operating budgets
- Manage collection development, including ordering books and materials
- Cultivate strong relationships within the community
- Communicate effectively with the Library Board of Directors, the Friends of the Library, the County Administrator, the County Board of Supervisors, and other stakeholders
- Advocate for the library and secure funding
- Develop and implement innovative programs and services
- Serve as administrator for library software and website
- Market library services and programs
- Maintain a strong knowledge of library trends and best practices
Qualifications:
- Master's degree in Library Science (MLS) from an ALA-accredited program
- Minimum of 5 years of experience in a supervisory or administrative role in a public library setting
- Must possess a Librarian's Professional Certification from the Library of Virginia
- Passion for public libraries and the communities they serve
- Strong leadership, communication, and interpersonal skills
- Ability to develop and manage budgets
- Experience with technology implementation
- Commitment to providing top-notch customer service
- Experience with building construction projects preferred

Salary and Benefits:
The salary range is $58,058 - $92,742 annually.
