BRIDGE REPLACEMENT PROJECT TO CLOSE CHEANEYS BRIDGE ROAD IN ESSEX COUNTY BEGINNING THURSDAY, MAY 22

Drivers are advised to use the recommended 6-mile detour or the most convenient alternate route during the bridge replacement

FREDERICKSBURG, Va. – Beginning Thursday, May 22, the Virginia Department of Transportation (VDOT) will begin a bridge replacement project on Route 607 (Cheaneys Bridge Road) over Dragon Run Creek in Essex County. A portion of Cheaneys Bridge Road will close on Thursday, May 22, and remain closed for approximately a year.

The replacement bridge will be built on the existing bridge alignment but will be 65 feet long. The travel lanes on the new bridge will be 10 feet wide. The existing structure was built in 1953 and is approximately 34 feet long.

Prior to the road closure, crews will begin mobilizing and installing detour signs, which will be uncovered the day of the road closure.

During construction, drivers will be detoured approximately 6 miles using the following routes:

  • Route 607 (Cheaneys Bridge Road)
  • Route 684 (Howerton Road)
  • Route 612 (Bestland Road)
  • Route 607 (Cheaneys Bridge Road)

Construction activity will be underway from 7 a.m. to 5 p.m. on weekdays.

Weather permitting, the bridge replacement project is expected to be complete and the road reopened to traffic in May 2026.

Message boards will be posted to notify motorists about the upcoming closure and detour.

A recent VDOT traffic count indicates that approximately 110 vehicles use the bridge each day.
