The Essex Circuit Court issues marriages license from 8:30am until 4pm Monday – Friday.
Both parties must be present for the application process. You both must bring government issued photo identification to apply.
The cost of a marriage license is $30.00 cash (exact change) or a check.
A marriage license is valid for 60 days from the date it is issued. The marriage license is valid immediately upon issuance – there is no waiting period. If you do not have a ceremony performed within 60 days of obtaining the license, the license is null and void and you must reapply.
Once issued, the marriage license is valid for a ceremony anywhere in the Commonwealth of Virginia only.
Your ceremony must be performed by a minister or officiant who is authorized to officiate marriages within the Commonwealth of Virginia.
Neither the Judges nor the Circuit Court Clerk performs weddings.
The Circuit Court does not automatically mail out certified copies of your marriage license. You must contact the office to request copies. The cost is $0.50 each.
